The ZippyScan Transverse boosts sorting efficiency in the brand new production line at KRAUSS

This year Europeans largest birch processing company KRAUSS launched it's brand new production line for wet-sawn timber that hosts our latest product ZippyScan Transverse, which can scan, sort and trim green boards.

SMARTER SORTING

Zippy Vision improves the operational efficiency of the largest European birch solid wood processor, Krauss, by installing its most recently launched product ZippyScan Transverse. The scanner is intended for evaluating wet-sawn boards just before drying, leveraging its ability to assess geometrical traits and surface quality from two sides. The system provides real-time 2D optimization for sorting and visual grading, helping maximize product value while enhancing kiln load quality and production efficiency.

As part of the wet-sawn board processing workflow, the ZippyScan Transverse enables precise edge trimming to remove unusable material before drying. By identifying defects and irregular geometry early, the system ensures that only valuable, process-ready wood enters the kiln, reducing energy consumption and avoiding the drying of low-quality or waste material.

Thanks to its robust multi-sensor architecture and AI-driven analysis, the ZippyScan Transverse maintains stable grading accuracy across all operational regimes, ensuring consistent quality and reliability under varying production conditions.

The system’s advanced multi-sensor setup may combine 3D laser profiling and color imaging, enabling accurate detection of board geometry, surface defects, and dimensional irregularities. It identifies twist, cracks, knots, wane, and other visual inconsistencies, supporting comprehensive quality control.

The system not only saves resources but also hosts predictive 2D optimization of the trimmed boards for future operations such as rip- and crosscutting. The managers can track kiln load predicted value and potential product output for "just-in-time" production mode. This feature significantly improves after drying inventory management.
